Diverticular disease is the presence of “pockets” or diverticulum in the lining of the bowel. When these “pockets” become infected, symptoms of pain and discomfort arise with fever and the condition is termed Diverticulitis. This requires urgent medical attention.
In the past, people with diverticulum were encouraged to avoid harsh fibres such as seeds and nuts. However, research now suggests this is unnecessary. The best treatment to prevent infections in Diverticular disease is to maintain regular bowel activity. Constipation is the major cause of Diverticular disease and Diverticulitis.
